Family Preservation Services: Helping Families Stay Safely Together
Family preservation services help children remain safely at home by giving parents and caregivers practical, community-based support before challenges become more disruptive.
Families may experience stress related to behavioral health needs, substance use, conflict, housing, finances, parenting, or other circumstances. When remaining together is safe, timely support can help families strengthen relationships, address immediate needs, and build skills for long-term stability.
At SAFY, this work is delivered through family supportive and preservation programs designed around each family’s strengths, needs, and goals.
SAFY teams work alongside families where daily life happens, including at home, school, work, and in the community. This helps families practice strategies in real situations and connect with resources that support physical, social, and emotional well-being.
What Are Family Preservation Services?
Family preservation services are structured supports intended to strengthen family functioning and help children remain safely connected to their parents or caregivers whenever appropriate. Services vary by program and location, but the focus is consistent to address challenges early, reduce unnecessary disruption, and help families create a safer, more stable home environment.
Rather than simply telling families what to do differently, SAFY professionals work collaboratively with families to identify goals, practice new skills, and develop strategies they can continue using after services end.
Depending on the program and family’s needs, services may include:
Family therapy or trauma-informed counseling
Parenting education and hands-on skill-building
Communication, anger-management, and conflict-resolution support
Crisis intervention and case management
Connections to community resources related to housing, healthcare, food, transportation, or financial stability
Because programs and eligibility requirements differ by location, families and referral partners should contact their local SAFY divisional office or use SAFY’s referral page to identify available services.
Why Early Support Matters
Early support can give families more time and more options to address concerns before they become a larger crisis.
For children, stability and continued connection with familiar caregivers, schools, and communities can be important. For parents and caregivers, practical support can build confidence and strengthen the skills needed to respond to stress, communicate effectively, and maintain a safe home.
Family preservation services may help families:
Identify and address the factors contributing to instability
Improve communication between parents, caregivers, and children
Practice healthier ways to manage conflict and stress
Strengthen parenting and caregiving skills
Connect with community resources that can reduce immediate pressures
Develop strategies that can continue after formal services end
How SAFY Supports the Whole Family
Family challenges are often connected. Behavioral health needs, financial pressure, school difficulties, housing concerns, and family conflict can affect one another.
SAFY’s approach looks at the family’s circumstances as a whole. Depending on the program, families may work with master’s-level clinicians and family support professionals who combine clinical expertise with practical, in-home or community-based support.
SAFY uses nationally recognized evidence-based practices with a focus on behavioral health within its family preservation programs. The goal is to provide support that is relevant to daily life, responsive to the family’s goals, and focused on measurable progress.
