State Director: Rex Uberman

Rex Uberman was named the South Carolina State Director for Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY) in 2012. Uberman previously served as Assistant Secretary for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, where he was responsible for the direction of 3,000 employees and a $300 million budget serving over 150,000 youth referred annually through contracted programs and state operated services. He promoted outcome performance-based initiatives, strategic planning and innovative contractual management strategies which improved departmental effectiveness and accountability.
Uberman implemented Florida’s “Centers of Excellence” program, providing residential services in mental health, developmental services, substance abuse treatment, and juvenile justice programs. He established the state’s first 1-800 hotline reporting system for abuse and neglect allegations.
Throughout his 30-year career as a juvenile justice and child welfare administrator, Uberman has lead multi-agency efforts improving service coordination for youth and families involved in more than one program, and developed public policy and operational procedures creating sustainable performance improvements.
